Erection of a 237' X 11'-6"Ø stack

The recent increase in power generating demands has resulted in a surge in construction of Gas Turbine Power Systems at new and existing facilities throughout the United States. At the PEI Power Facility (a joint venture between Cayuga Energy and New York State Electric and Gas), Gibraltar Chimney was contracted to erect the 237' X 11'-6"Ø stack for the GE Power System LM-6000 gas turbine.

The facility is nestled in a valley located just outside Scranton, Pennsylvania. A constricted site and narrow access road winding down into the plant required that all stack sections and materials be double handled before ‘reaching the hook’ for erection. The fast track construction schedule allowed for less than 10 weeks from construction start, to test and the stack erection was critical path to the plant start-up.

The stack erection package included the structural steel stack support tower, turbine transition duct, turbine silencers and the insulated stainless steel liner. A 250-ton conventional truck crane was utilized to complete the largest lift, a 120,000 lbs. Silencer duct, which was set as a single section.
